Gateway
Equipment
The
radio in use for the gateway is an Xtreme XT1000 and is completely
unmodified. It is mounted in the loft on the end of a 4.5' long
plank of wood so it is right up in the apex of the roof. It is
connected to a dedicated 200 MHz Pentium running Windows 98.
Up
until February 2004 the link radio was an Oregon Scientific TP326
which was switched for the XT1000 after a visit from Ofcom who
told me that powering the TP326 from a mains adapter connected
to a pair of dummy batteries was breaking the PMR446 regulations.
The
XT1000 seems to perform much better than the TP326 and gives a
noticably better range which is probably due to the 1/4 wave antenna.
